TL;DR

  • All is well in Medellin! I appreciate everyone’s concerns with me heading down here and I will certainly be safe. It’s a beautiful country, we’re in a super safe part of town, and the food and coffee has been great so far.

  • It’s a bit hard to work from 9am to midnight in the US. Down here, it’s what my whole apartment is doing everyday. Really fun building vibe.

  • I got told my Spanish was formal by a local the other day - guess the Spaniards rubbed off a bit on me?

Documenting my journey

To see how amazing the cafes are down here, click here.

  • I’m getting mixed responses on whether my 2-hour layover in Panama counts as visiting that country, but for now I’ll go with ‘no.’

  • There’s a great digital nomad culture down here, you can really find it in the cafes. Yesterday I met someone that lives 10 mins from my family in NC - small world.

  • I’m grateful the other guys I’m down here with have optimized everything for productivity - it’s really fun to build alongside them and share ideas with eachother between calls and coding sprints.

  • It STORMS every afternoon at 2pm here - the little umbrella I bought in Spain can’t keep up…

    • Fun fact, the Spanish word for umbrella is Paragua - literally translates to “stop water.” This is also where Parasol comes from (“stop sun”). Neat, right?

FINANCES

Money and Investing Updates

  • $177. That was my avg. daily spend in Spain last month. So far in Colombia, it’s been more like $70. Rock on.

  • 600%. The return I missed out on because I forgot to place my brokerage ‘buy’ on Allbirds last week. I was purchasing because I love their shoes and thought they were under-valued compared to NAV. Turns out they made an AI pivot this week?? And shot up 600%. Didn’t see that coming. Onto the next.

  • $40. The cost of my monthly gym membership down here. Bit easier to swallow than the $200 I was paying in Charlotte, though One Athletics did come with a killer sauna…

  • $5,000. The size of my tax refund this year. Turns out, there’s a lot more deductions for business owners than I initially realized. I’ll take what I can get! Instead of a $5k check, I’m just applying this towards my next quarterly IRS payments (a really fun part of entrepreneurship), so it’s not actually as exciting as it sounds.

BUSINESS PULSE

  • We have a few exciting new clients on the horizon that we’ll be launching campaigns for. Stoked to help them stand out and scale their businesses w/ digital ads.

  • We dove more into a case study with one of our clients last week - who we’ve helped grow their entire business 30% y/y with our ads. Our team is the best in the biz and I’m so grateful to learn from them everyday.

  • We also launched a new website last week, let me know what you think!

  • The new website, newsletter, and course we’re building out are going to be insane. More value for free here than most investing gurus are charging for. Gonna be awesome.

  • I’m proud to be a board member for this group and I’m also proud to say I’ll be the keynote speaker at the May 6 meetup. If you’re in Charlotte, I’d be honored to see you there and I promise to make it valuable.

  • I’ll even be building a website from scratch and pushing it live within 10 mins. Hope I didn’t bite off more than I can chew there.

Come hang out! 6pm @ Noble Smoke in CLT on May 6th

WHAT I’M LEARNING

AI Implementation

  • I’ve been spending all my waking hours learning AI and automation tools this year, and it’s really starting to show. I’ve advised a few friends and founders on how to implement awesome automations into their businesses for fulfillment, sales and marketing, and more.

  • I’ve always loved automations - I won two OpEx awards at Bank of America and majored in Applied Math in college. However, the worst part of all these dashboarding, automation, and workflow tools was the formatting. Claude Code now makes that obsolete, and it’s sooooo much more fun to be building!

WHAT I’M CONSUMING

John. Summit.

    • Elite for workouts and work-sessions alike.

  • If you haven’t seen his new album, check it out. I totally love that he left corporate to follow his dreams and then created his whole new album about that journey. Even launched on tax day since he used to be an accountant. Such great branding!

DESK OF THE WEEK

📍 Cafe in Medellin, Colombia

The ability to work all day and just keep ordering coffees and food here is quite dangerous…

WHAT’S NEXT?

  • Full week of building ahead in Colombia!

  • I’m actively looking to plan the rest of my Spring/Summer - any recs for Mexico, Asia, UK, and Europe would be greatly appreciated.

  • I’ll need to pick up some more cycling — just signed up for my second 24 Hours of Booty event in Charlotte on July 24th.

Adventure is out there!

✌️ Matthew
